Frequently Asked Questions for Rotary Vacuum Pump Series
Motion principle is greatest feature of Pisco Rotary Vacuum Pump.
It adopts neither vane system nor diaphragm system nor rolling piston system but independently developed rotary system. This motion principle brings various benefits and significantly contributes to the energy saving.
What is rotary system?
Rotary system create a vacuum from repetition of eccentric rotation by special-shaped rotor.
Furthermore, structure of rotary system has several unique features.
Give a fixed micro-clearance in between rotor and cylinder
Rotary system is non-contact structure and it enables microminiaturization of sliding portion.
Unlike vane pump, friction powder does not occur.
Adopt magnet-coupling at rotational transmission of the motor and the pump
Without seal sliding at rotating shaft, sealing does not generate heat and it realizes maintenance-free.
Misalignment of motor shaft is minimized and it prolongs the service life.
Deliberation for rotational balance
Well-balanced design on rotary unit realizes low noise operation and low vibration.
These are just a few features of Pisco rotary vacuum pump. We are currently receiving inquiries for various applications such as adsorption conveyance device, vacuum packing system, etc.
It is assumed that is due to actuation of thermal protector caused by the heat generated in a motor. Please make sure that unusual odor and/or smoke are not emitted. The pump might be getting very hot.
Be careful not to get burn yourself when touch the pump.
Turn on the switch of thermal protector after when the main body is cooled.
* Turn on electricity again and test the operation.
*) RPV064-120 series applies self-returning circuit thus it automatically resumes when the body temperature drops to the operation resumption temperature. (86±20℃)
In the specification, operational gas (inhaled gas) is uncorrosive and inexplosive gases.
*) If you are planning to apply the gases out of the specifications, you need to make a decision based on your evaluation and judgment.
Do not inhale corrosive and exposable gases. Do not use at the environment where there is a risk of ignition to flammable/explosive gases. It may cause a gas explosion and fire.
*) Do not inhale volatile alcohol component too.
In the specification, operational gas (inhaled gas) is uncorrosive and inexplosive gases.
It may cause of troubles especially when inhales high temperature steam. Please contact nearest Pisco business office for more details.
Keep the inner temperature of the device below 40℃ if the device is sealed or nearly sealed. Although it depends on the heating value of adjacent apparatus, keep a interspace of 5 cm or more at circumference of the pump.
Also, take precautions below into account when set up pump and ventilation opening port.
1. Secure ventilation for pump cooling air
Concentrically arranged long hole at opposite side of motor is "Air-cooling exhaust port" for forced air cooling of pump.
A number of slits at between motor and pump (rotation of the fan is seen) are "Air-cooling suction port" for forced air cooling of pump. (*see figure below)
Don't interfere and secure the fluid passage for these ports related to forced air cooling.
2. Secure ventilation for motor cooling air
Motor with the rated output 60 watts and 90 watts are equipped with cooling-fan at a tip of motor." Motor cooling air suction port" is formed at the end of motor tip. Don't interfere and secure the fluid passage.
3. Heat radiation from pump body surface
In addition to the ventilation explained above, heat is radiated from the surface of pump and motor. Carry out measures such as securing sufficient ventilation, installation of external cooling-fan so that heated air by radiation does not retain around the pump.
No motor specially made for clean-room is available. Thus, you need to take a countermeasure such as covering the motor and others. Please consult with Pisco business office.
Ambient temperature of Rotary Vacuum Pump should be 5 to 40℃.
The cover arranged by customer sometimes causes retention of ambient air and it brings heat of pump and motor.
Keep ambient temperature lower than 40℃, otherwise load of inner tank may abnormally increase. Watch out when installing the vacuum pomp close to the heat source too.
Suspend operation of rotary vacuum pump if the ambient temperature is felt high. Be careful not to burn yourself when touch the pump with the hands.
Resume operation after main body of the vacuum pump is cooled down and temperature inside the cover falls.
Please refer to the following characteristics of exhaust cleaner.

"Filtering unit must be adopted at vacuum port side as suction of foreign substances such as dust causes operational defects.
Filtering accuracy at vacuum port side filter is recommended to be smaller than 10μm*."
*) 10μm refers the size of particles containing in the normal atmosphere. Thus, although filtering accuracy is smaller than 10μm, defects may occur if it sucks high density powderlike particles.
Recommended products
Vacuum Filter (VFR)
Removes dust and water-drops sucked from vacuum port by the element and the cyclone effect. Bigger-sized dust case reduces frequency of maintenance."
Vacuum Filter (VFU)
Quickly installable in the middle of piping. Small piping resistance and high stability."
We will replace or perform maintenance if the vacuum pump stops due to intake of the foreign object, thus please contact us without attempting to remove the foreign object forcibly or disassemble the vacuum pump by yourself.
Fluor resin grease whose base oil is lowest level-volatile is used for the sliding part of Rotary Vacuum Pump.
(Base oil: Perfluoropolyether oil, thickener: PTFE)
The motors of Rotary Vacuum Pump are all induction motors with thermal protectors mounted.
AC motors are classified mainly into 2 types; synchronous motor and induction motor.
The latter one is popular in general. Induction motor has a squirrel-cage like structure
and it is sometimes referred as a squirrel-cage induction motor.
Induction motor are divided into a single-phase motor and a three-phase motor by the type of input AC. Number of wires is different. For single-phase motor, 2 wires are used, but for three-phase motor, 3 wires.
Single-phase motor
A since single-phase motor does not rotate by itself. Circuit with a capacitor can alter
the current and its alternating electric current can rotate the motor. Thanks to less wiring and
low voltage, safe single-phase motor is chosen for ordinary household.
Three-phase motor
Switching-on generates magnetic field to rotate the motor and a three-phase motor rotates by itself.
Its smooth rotation and high output power are preferred to use as industrial power at plants.
A three-phase motor is composed of three single phase AC. The motor is rotated by the three-phase motor with 120°difference by the one rotation.

Please refer to PISCO catalogue for the basic spec.
For "Cautions for installation ", "Thermal protector" and the others, please refer to the related topics.
Thermal protector protects the motor from overheat or burning caused by the motor's overload.
PISCO thermal protector restores automatically. The thermal protector starts working to stop the motor when the motor gets heated, but when the motor cools down, it restarts automatically. In order to avoid this, thermal protector equips self-holding circuit with SW(switch) and Ry(Relay). To secure your safety, please follow the circuit below.
We recommend users to use the thermal protector for your safety. Unless the thermal protector is used, the motor may be overloaded and it may burn the motor or cause a fire.
RPV064 series has a self- restoring thermal protector in the winding part of the motor. Having the thermal protector working, the motor restarts to work automatically when the motor temperature becomes low. To prevent dangers caused by unexpected restart, install a self-restoring-circuit with a Relay and Switch to secure your safety.

There are non-metal component parts such as O-rings, check packings and other rubber parts (all the materials are Fluororesin) used, however, they are not prepared for flame retardant grade.
*Although the UL mark is printed on the name plate of the motor, Rotary Vacuum Pump itself is not a UL certified product.
When multiple Rotary Vacuum Pumps are installed to one equipment with exhaust cleaners, use one exhaust cleaner for one Rotary Vacuum Pump.
If 2 Rotary Vacuum Pumps are used with only one exhaust cleaner, the exhaust port side becomes obstructed, then the back pressure increases. The increased back pressure will uplift the load on the Rotary Vacuum Pump and finally it may become heated.
Please try to shorten and thicken the plumbing between the vacuum port and the vacuum cleaner as much as possible when plumbing. Also be aware to have proper piping diameter for tube exhaust to prevent back pressure on exhaust side port from elevation.
There are two ways of measuring pressure, absolute pressure and gauge pressure.
Absolute pressure
Absolute pressure is zero-referenced against a perfect vacuum.
It is commonly used to measure flow rate.
When indicated, "abs" is inserted following the unit, for example 10 kPa abs.
Gauge pressure
Gauge pressure is zero-referenced against ambient air pressure.
It indicate how much pressure per 1cm2 is against the ambient air pressure. It is commonly used for indication of manometer. When the pressure is over the ambient air pressure, it is called "positive pressure" and when it is under the ambient air pressure, it is called "negative pressure."
